Location

Moretonhampstead

Lying on the eastern slopes of the Dartmoor National Park, Moretonhampstead is surrounded by some of the finest countryside in England.
Although locals will proudly proclaim it as a town, Moretonhampstead is essentially a village in character. It is located at the almost exact geographical centre of the county of Devon. This central position makes it an ideal base to explore not only the unique features of Dartmoor, but also the whole of Devon.  Dartmoor National Park has recently been in the spotlight as it provided many of the stunning locations for the filming of the new Spielberg blockbuster War Horse.  Moretonhampstead, whilst not one of the locations for the film, is central to many of them.  More information can be found at www.dartmoor-npa.gov.uk/aboutus/war-horse.
Moretonhampstead is situated at a cross-roads amidst wooded, hilly countryside and has a population of around 1,500. The central part of the town stands at an altitude of 700 feet but a short stroll within the parish will elevate the walker to beyond 1,100 feet and afford spectacular views of the surrounding area.
